In the last twenty years, dental implant surgery evolved dramatically. Dental implantology today is no longer just placing an implant directly in the bone but also using digital pre-planning, minimally invasive surgery techniques, understanding bone biology, soft tissue management and regenerative procedures which are combined to make the end results predictable for life.
Being an Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeon all my life, I continuously adopted new evidence-based techniques whenever they got clinical success. Instead of following the trends, my approach was always to integrate innovations only after they demonstrated clear benefits for precision, healing and long-term success.

2015: Moving Toward Digital Precision
In 2015, I began computer-guided implant surgeries. Surgical guides enabled me to digitally plan implant surgery and accurately execute it on the patient.
As a result, I saw enhanced implant positioning, prosthetic planning and more predictable surgical outcomes at the same time. In that year, I added another technique to my surgical treatment: Piezosurgery. This technique made operations like sinus augmentation, bone graft harvesting and alveolar augmentation more gentle, safe, and conservative through the manual cutting of bone tissue leaving soft tissues unharmed.
2017: Enhancing Biology with PRF
Around 2017, I decided to use Platelet-Rich Fibrin (PRF) as part of my surgery protocol. PRF is made from the patient’s own blood and has natural levels of growth factors which encourage wound healing and tissue regeneration.
Now, many of my bone grafting procedures, extraction sockets, sinus lifts and soft tissue surgeries use PRF when we can get biological benefits from it.
2018: Improving Primary Stability with Osseodensification
After the Versah Osseodensification system became available, I incorporated it in my practice in 2018.
Closing the osteotomy hole while bone is being compacted and preserved by osseodensification is something that conventional drilling methods can not do. As a result, the placement of implants is more stable in general, but especially in softer bones.
The technique has mostly proven itself to be of great benefit for cases of immediate implantation and certain sinus lift procedures.
2020: Refining Soft Tissue Surgery
Around 2020, my attention turned from mainly working on bone reconstruction along with carefully managing the soft tissues.
I introduced the microsurgical tools, which meant that the handling of tissues was much more careful, the making of incisions was to a lesser extent, finer stitches were made, and the blood supply was kept intact.
In the same phase, I also began to make good use of PeriAcryl tissue glue to cover the soft tissue grafts, donor sites and surgical wounds, enhancing patient comfort and at the same time promoting uncomplicated healing.
Technology Is Only A Part of Successful Implant Surgery
Every technology comes with its own benefits, but they cannot guarantee a successful outcome on their own.
Long-term Dental implant surgery requires:
- Comprehensive diagnosis
- Three-dimensional treatment planning
- Appropriate case selection
- Precise surgical execution
- Respect for bone and soft tissue biology
- Long-term maintenance
Technology should only be used to support the surgical principles- not to replace them.
Looking Forward
Implant dentistry is evolving with the heightened use of artificial intelligence, digital workflows, dynamic surgical navigation, robotics and personalized regenerative therapies.
In short, the surgeon’s aim is basically to be on the lookout for new technological advances, pick those that are backed by scientifically sound research and apply those methods only when they genuinely improve patient outcomes rather than simply because they are new.
